As part of our functions to monitor, review and advise on adapting to climate change and achieving emissions reduction targets, the letter contains advice for the IPC to consider when assessing projects. The IPC makes planning decisions on State significant developments which have greenhouse gas emissions and other potential impacts due to a changing climate. The IPC also provides advice to the Minister for Planning and the Secretary of the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure on planning decisions.
Key takeaways:
- Given the Climate Change (Net Zero Future) Act 2023 now makes targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions law in NSW as well as setting an objective for NSW to become more resilient to climate change, integrating these considerations into planning approvals is crucial.
- In addition to considering the emissions impacts and adaptation measures of proposals, we also encourage the consideration of the findings in our Annual Progress Report as an independent reference.
The letter is not intended as a report under the Act.
